Album Review: Kim Deal - 'Nobody Loves You More'

Legendary alternative mainstay Kim Deal (Breeders, Pixies, and more) has emerged from touring with Dayton-based Breeders with her first solo LP! Work on some of the songs on the project began as early as in 2011, specifically "Are You Mine?" and "Wish I Was" came during this period when Deal was fresh off a split with Pixies. What one immediately notices about the sounds of the first two tracks ("Nobody Loves You More" and "Coast") off the album is a noticeable lack of bite from distortion driven guitars. Rather these are substituted for horns and drums which hold the melodies. It's not a bad thing, but decidedly unlike anything Deal has done in the past.

The guitar returns on "Crystal Breath" which features an almost electric sounding beat to it. Over Deal's effects-driven vocals, the pairing is a great shake up from the initial sound Deal was developing in the early going. "Are You Mine?" a song about Deal's mother's dementia is a noticeably slower track that changes the pace and features prominent dual-layered vocalization over the light beat. The track is a slow burner for sure, but one that feels like a classic from The Breeders. It even includes some strings.

"Big Ben Beat" brings back signature deal sounding guitars and features a manic rhythm over an authoritative vocal style that only Deal can do. One part about this track that we particularly loved was the prominent bassline that was thick throughout. What Nobody Loves You More represents is Kim Deal without boundaries, meticulously telling stories as only she can. She tackles issues such as her mothers dementia and winter vacations with her parents. What's clear is that Kim Deal can stand to her name as the influential icon who has had an impact on artists like Kurt Cobain.
