Album Review: Phantogram - 'Memory of a Day'

Greenwich, New York electronic rock duo Phantogram are back with their latest LP, Memory of a Day! We're not going to lie, when we heard this one was coming, we were amped up. Phantogram are a band that straddles the electronic music genre so well, but they incorporate a lot of elements of other sounds to their music. The same can be said about their newest release.

Instrumentalist/Vocalist Sarah Barthel has a vocal style that floats in an almost ethereal fashion about the beats and synths that her and fellow instrumentalist/vocalist Josh Carter create. Right out of the gate on Memory of a Day, the duo brings a wallop of a one-two punch with "Jealousy" and "It Wasn't Meant to Be". These two feature heavy electronic melodies with fantastic vocals from Barthel.

Things slow down a bit with "All A Mystery", but in a good way. The highs that Barthel is able to achieve with her vocals shows that she's got mad range. Barthel and Carter coyly play with listeners with another slowed down track on "Attaway" before popping off on a bright hook that puts the listener into a trance. It's one of the most beautiful sounds on the album when pairing the melody with Barthel's vocals on this part.

Overall, if you're a fan of Phantogram, you're going to love this one. If you're new to the band, this is a nice starting place as well as the songs are accessible to the listener and range between three to four minutes long. New York's Phantogram continue to show that they have a unique sound and have a deep well of melodies and lyrics with which to pull from. With five LPs and seven EPs since 2007, the band shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon and we're here for it.
