Album Review: Soccer Mommy - 'Evergreen'

Singer-Songwriter Sophie Allison has turned her project Soccer Mommy from a DIY bedroom to Bandcamp exercise to becoming one of indie rock's leading voices and we've loved every second of it. She writes fully with her entire being and it shows through the projection of her vocals, the ache in her voice, the strumming of her guitar, and the pairing of the melodies to the vocal tracks. So when her latest LP Evergreen was announced we had high expectations to say the least.

"M" really sets the tone of a Soccer Mommy record, there's just something about Allison's style that reminds us of a 90's alt Mazzy Star-esque themed style, but something we love so much more than just a sound of a bygone era. It's clear Allison has her finger on the pulse of what's important to this generation. Allison can do it all, on Evergreen she perfectly pairs tracks about great personal turmoil with love songs as well.

Some people feel that albums should have themes and stick to a consistent message. Allison's music has so much thematic presence because she writes from the heart about her life. We don't think it can get any more real than that. The music is also ranging, she begins the album with a more acoustically-driven tune in "Lost", but by song three she's broken out her electric guitar and distortion pedal that she's known so well for. The way her falsetto perfectly pairs with a distortion pedal will never cease to amaze me, but alas we are here.

If you are a fan of Soccer Mommy, you're going to love this album as Allison continues to build upon the work of her previous credits. If you haven't listened before, this is a great album and could be a starting place to finding one of your new favorite artists. This album is damn good.
