We interviewed up-and-coming dark pop/alternative artist Annie Scherer, a singer/songwriter based in Nashville about her recently released single "Suddenly" (listen now everywhere), her upcoming EP, and much more!
According to your press release, you’ve been playing music since you were six years old. Can you speak a little bit about your earlier career and some of your influences you had coming up as a young musician?
"Yes! I started classical piano training when I was six and fell in love with playing piano. The first songs I ever wrote were notated on manuscript paper. While I don’t perform piano as much, I still practice and teach myself new pieces when I can. I love the impressionist movement, and I think it’s why I love writing with unique chord progressions."
"I also grew up listening to bands like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Nirvana, etc. basically only music that came before me. I listened only to my parents’ CDs and mixtapes, and I didn’t have cable or an iPod, so music from that era has really inspired me."
Your new single “Suddenly” is a breath of fresh air with captivating vocals, a dynamic melody, it leaves you floored. Can you provide us with some of the background that went into writing and recording this single?
"Thank you so much! I wanted “Suddenly” to sound like a song that plays at the end of a movie while the credits are rolling. It’s about character development and finding freedom in what’s real and true. I started writing it after watching the season finale of a TV show."
You have an EP coming up in the fall! Tell us all about what listeners can expect from you on this release.
"I’m super excited to share the songs on the EP. They’re very dark and moody, but also dreamy and ethereal. There are pretty strong themes throughout each song and subtle references to literature and pop culture. It’s like “if you know you know.” I love including odes to art in my music."
What experiences do you have taking some of this new music on the road or live? What are some of your favorite aspects about performing live?
"I usually perform the stripped down versions of new songs first to see how listeners react. “Suddenly” was a song I performed with acoustic guitar often, and one that I wasn’t sure I was releasing. It stood out to people, so I decided to move forward with the recording process."
"My favorite part about performing is bringing the song to life with a full band. It paints the full picture for the audience as opposed to the stripped versions. It’s also fun dressing up and doing my makeup however I feel. Don’t get me wrong, I do have stage fright, especially because I’m an introvert, but it’s always fun once I get up there."
What can we expect next from you?
"There may or may not be a music video coming very soon. I also have a couple Nashville shows coming up. One is on 4/3 at City Winery, and there are a couple in May that have yet to be announced. I’m super excited to perform alongside some of the talent I’ve met here."
