Frances Whitney on 'Old Hobbies'

Frances Whitney | Old Hobbies EP release date 11/15

Frances Whitney’s EP is about losing her grip on harmful hobbies. Alongside exploring the idea of codependency, the uncertainty of one’s mid-twenties as well as the journey of reclaiming one’s self worth. I was lucky enough to get to chat with Frances on a zoom call and ask some questions about this EP.

Frances talked about her influences from her personal life, alongside influences in the music industry. We got the opportunity to talk about what some of these songs are about more specifically. For example, the stresses of creating her first project alongside any songs that didn’t make it to see the EP.

Frances influences in the music aspect of life are Carol King, Jackson Brown as well as Phoebe Bridgers. As for influences in personal life there are relationships as is with many musicians, whether that be all consuming, or toxic relationships. We dove into the influences behind my personal favorite song on the EP “Holding On“ and how this song is relatable to virtually anyone that is in the current dating pool.

We spoke of Frances first tour supporting Kevin Garrett and how it's helped her with her first headlining shows. This tour has helped Frances get more comfortable onstage, and create more of a routine when it comes to performing. What is nice about her supporting Kevin on this tour is that it's simply just her and her guitar, creating more of an intimate feel to the whole performance.

This EP took Frances about a year to create. There were a plethora of songs that didn't make it to this EP that may see the light of day in the future, or a possible deluxe version featuring a song called “Theos Party“.

Frances was such a personable individual to talk to, and an incredible artist. This EP is just the start of what should be a long career, and us folks over at Alt Revue are incredibly excited to see what else she will create in the future.
